Purple Up! For Military Kids

In 1986, former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger designated April as the Month of the Military Child.

This month highlights the vital role military children play in the armed forces community. Growing up in a military family comes with unique challenges, from frequent relocations to long separations due to deployments. In addition to the usual experiences of childhood, military kids must constantly adapt to change—a task that requires resilience and strength. The Month of the Military Child is a time to recognize and appreciate these children and their families for their sacrifices and unwavering flexibility.

Purple Up! for Military Kids Day – April 15th

Established in 2011 by the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension Military Youth and Family Program, Purple Up! for Military Kids is a special day set aside to honor military children from all branches of service. The date, April 15th, falls within the Month of the Military Child and serves as a unifying celebration. The color purple represents the blend of Army Green, Marine Corps Red, and the Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard Blues—symbolizing support for all military children.
